The Different Types of Drives and Upshots.

Are you looking to take your disc golf game to the next level?  DiscIn is here to help with a basic article on the types of drives.  One way to improve your skills on the course is by mastering different types of disc golf throws.  In this article we are going to talk about the different types of drives and up shots that can be used.  When you have a variety of throws to your repertoire, you can navigate the course more effectively and tackle a wider range of challenges. Let's explore some of the most common types of disc golf throws and how you can incorporate them into your game.

The Backhand Throw?

The backhand throw is one of the most fundamental throws in disc golf. To execute a backhand throw, the player grips the disc with their thumb on top and their fingers underneath. The player then pulls the disc across their body, releasing it with a flick of the wrist. This throw is great for achieving distance and accuracy on straight shots.

The Forehand Throw?

The forehand throw, also known as a sidearm or flick, is another essential throw in disc golf. To perform a forehand throw, the player holds the disc with their thumb on the outside edge and their fingers underneath. The player then snaps their wrist to release the disc, generating power and spin. The forehand throw is ideal for navigating tight fairways and executing controlled shots around obstacles.

The Overhand Throw

The overhand throw, including the thumber and tomahawk, is a versatile throw that can be useful in certain situations on the disc golf course. The thumber is executed by gripping the disc with the thumb on top and the fingers underneath, then throwing the disc overhand with a thumb flick. The tomahawk is similar but is thrown with an overhand motion instead. These throws are great for getting over obstacles or executing a spike hyzer shot.

The Roller Throw

The roller throw is a unique technique that involves throwing the disc at a sharp angle so that it rolls along the ground. This throw can be useful for navigating tight lines or getting around obstacles that would be difficult to clear with a traditional throw. By mastering the roller throw, you can add another dimension to your game and tackle challenging terrain with ease.

Why So Many Different Types?

There are various types of throws because courses vary.  Some courses are wide open and you can use basic throws for the round.  Some courses are very technical and have obstacles you need to shoot over, around or throw a tight gap with a dog leg towards the basket.

By incorporating these different types of disc golf throws into your game, you can become a more well-rounded and versatile player. Practice each throw regularly to build consistency and accuracy, and don't be afraid to experiment with different techniques to see what works best for you. With dedication and practice, you can elevate your disc golf game and take on any course with confidence.
